Convention Center Groundbreaking

By Paige Browning

Cracking a cement wall in front of the former C.I Shenanigans restaurant is how city leaders marked a new phase of construction Wednesday. At a groundbreaking ceremony for the Spokane Convention Center Completion Project, Kevin Twohig explained how the project will transform the building’s north side, and the river shoreline. Twohig is the CEO of the Spokane Public Facilities District.

Garco Construction will conduct the renovation of the riverfront and the north side of the Spokane Convention Center. We’re adding 91,000 square feet to the building, so everything between the existing building and 75 feet from the ordinary high water mark, will be new. So we’ll keep the big trees, change the vegetation, redo the trail, the trail will be brand spanking new through here.”

The convention center project will cost 41-million dollars, funded through a voter approved extension of existing taxes. The completion date is set for December 2014, and Shenanigans will be gone much earlier- by next month.
