Idaho’s Hilary Knight Named To U.S. Women’s Olympic Hockey Team

By Sadie Babits

The U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey team was announced on New Year’s day and Idaho’s Hilary Knight made the cut. Knight told Sadie Babits she found out a week ago she’d made the hockey team but had to keep it secret.

Hilary Knight started dreaming about being an Olympian when she was five. She became one in 2010 as part of the U.S. Women’s Ice Hockey team that won silver at the winter games in Vancouver.

Knight: "After suffering the tough defeat and heart break in the gold medal game in 2010 we all made this silent pack saying ok in the next four years it’s business and we’re going to go back and win a gold medal in Russia."

Now, four years later this Sun Valley resident is ready for her second winter Olympics. She describes the team as split between veteran players like herself and first time Olympians. And Knight says the team is stronger and faster than the 2010 version.

Knight: "If you were to describe us in one word it would be dynamic."

Knight is currently training in Boston. The team will go to Germany ahead of the Olympic games to train. Knight predicts they will arrive in Sochi, Russia a few days before the Olympics get underway.
