Group to Bring Citizens United to WA Ballots

By Paige Browning

A Washington state group that opposes limitless corporate contributions to political campaigns has announced plans for a 2014 ballot measure. The WAmend coalition plans to gather signatures from January through July, in hopes the measure will make it to the November ballot next year.

The initiative would behave as a resolution, and would not change state law. If passed, Washington would call on US Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizen’s United decision. The high court decision allows corporations to contribute limitlessly to political groups. About 15 other states have called on Congress to overturn the citizens united decision.

Voters in Spokane nearly saw the topic of campaign contributions on countywide ballots last month, but the proposition was kept off the ballot after arguments from the mayor and select city council members prompted a court review.
