KPBX 91.1 fm, Tuesday, 7pm-8pm
Angela Mariani hosts this weekly program exploring the world of Early
Music, from the transcendent sounds of Anonymous 4, to the sublime realm
of Chant, to the passion of an Italian Baroque violin sonata. Harmonia
is produced in conjunction with Indiana University's world-renowned Early
Music Institute.

Handel in Italy
Harmonia takes a look this week at Handel's Italian sojourn, an unusually
productive period in the life of one of music history's most popular figures.
Music for Roman churches and palaces will be explored alongside a new
release by American guitarist Richard Savino.

The Lute Books of Francesco Spinacino
This week Harmonia explores the first printed music for the lute, Francesco
Spinacino's Intabulatura de lauto of 1507. Spinacino's life in brief,
lute settings of popular chansons, and the story behind the last surviving
copies of his lute books are all on the docket

by the Holland Baroque Society in a program of music by Georg Muffat.

Amarillis on the Naïve Label
The dynamic French ensemble Amarillis is the highlight of a recent four-CD
box set on the Naïve label. This week, Harmonia explores the release
Europe Baroque which includes the music of Vivaldi and Handel, as well
as an exciting tour through 17th-century Italy and the late French Baroque.
The baroque orchestra Les Muffatti will perform in a new release of music
by Johann Christoph Pez.

Late Medieval Songs from Cyprus
This week Harmonia looks at excerpts from a manuscript of late-medieval
French songs copied on the island of Cyprus during the first half of the
15th Century. Ensemble La Morra's recent exploration of this repertoire
on the Ramée label is featured alongside a new release of 17th-century
French and Italian music entitled Musique pour Mazarin!

Circa 1500
Harmonia takes a trip this week through Renaissance Europe with the London-based
ensemble Circa 1500 and its director Nancy Hadden. Music from the time
of the Mary Rose, the Courts of Mantua and Ferrara, the Spanish Kingdoms,
and the London streets are complemented by Circa 1500's latest release
of German motets entitled "Sacred Concerti."

A Purcell Celebration, pt. 1
This week, Harmonia celebrates the music of Henry Purcell, one of England's
greatest composers. A look as his small-scale compositions will include
his pieces for keyboard, music for string ensembles, and his songs
plus, a new release by Swiss baroque cellist Martin Zeller.

Obsidian Records (UK)
This week, Harmonia samples releases from Obsidian Records, England's
newest label devoted to Early Music, including performances by Alamire,
Quintessential, and Andrew Lawrence King, among others. Music of Renaissance
composers Josquin, Tomkins, Senfl, and Verdelot are explored in addition
to Obsidian's latest release entitled Henry's Music.

The Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra... Live!
Barthold Kuijken, artistic director of the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra,
joins Harmonia this week to explore music from a recent performance by
the orchestra. Entitled "The Nations," the program includes
music by Lully, Bach, and a little-known flute concerto by Vivaldi. Bart
Kuijken also performs in a new Accent label release of music by Johann
Sebastian Bach's Sons.

Medieval Instruments
Instruments from the middle ages are not likely to evoke pleasant thoughts
unless it concerns ones of a musical variety. This week, Harmonia gets
medieval on you in a tour of the typical instruments of the period---the
vielle, recorder, organetto, and the pipe and tabor. La Colombina will
also perform in a recent release of music by Tomas Luis de Victoria.
