Frank Sennett
highlights some of the news and culture stories from the nation’s alternative
weekly newspapers, with his own twist on the topic.
NEW! Podcasts

The
voice and writer of the program is Frank
Sennett, a Spokane resident and Montana native who has a long history
with the alternative press. He used to be managing editor of Newcity weekly
in Chicago until his wife-to-be found a job at a Spokane publication.
So he moved to the online side co-creating the company’s national website,
Newcity.com, which he describes as
an alternative press network with affiliates from around the country.
“We banded together to make a larger voice out of smaller voices,” Sennett
says.
Sennett also had an interest in radio, stemming from his time at the University
of Montana earning an MFA in creative writing. He produced and hosted
an eclectic humor and music program for three years. “I love radio, it’s
my favorite medium. I was trying to figure out how to do something positive
with alternative press and radio, so I recorded a demo of The Alternative
Source with my old pals at Montana Public Radio.
"Then I called Doug (Nadvornick, SPR News Director). He hooked me up with
Marty Demarest, who’s clearly an excellent producer. Marty helped design
a great format. Patrick Klausen has been great as well.” Patrick records,
edits and mixes the show and also posts the finished programs for archival
on the Spokane Public Radio website.
The Alternative Source airs two news stories, usually related to activism
and social causes, followed by two culture stories looking at new trends,
or an alternative take on a current trend. Sennett follows up with a tag
line he likes to call his “Paul Harvey moment.”
“I try to have fun with it. The attitude of the show is a little satirical.
It’s just some ironic or sarcastic or goofy reaction to the story. I hope
it makes people chuckle, or think.
“It’s definitely an up-front progressive, alternative viewpoint. It
can be uncomfortable to the traditional journalists to take on a commentary
role, but I think it’s good to signpost clearly that this is an alternative
perspective on what the mainstream offers. It’s my five minutes a week
to have a little opinion.”
