Exploring the Challenges of Special Needs Children

September 23, 2003
Children with autism, spina bifida (spy’-nuh biff’-id-duh), attention deficit hyperactive disorder and many other conditions often require extra help. Sometimes they need medication, sometimes emotional or physical therapy. Sometimes they need full-time help in dressing themselves, eating, using the restroom.

Spokane Public Radio’s Doug Nadvornick talks with the mother of a special needs child about the challenges of raising her son.

Doug: Diane Powell-Nyman says her son Nicholas was born nine weeks early with a condition that caused swelling in his brain. His cerebral palsy limits the use of his arms and his legs.

Initially, she says, Nicholas’ growth was slow. But she says she went to find therapy for him and contacted the Children First program at the Spokane Child Development Center.

Diane Powell-Nyman 2:15 “My first thought was…mentally disabled kids.”

Diane Powell-Nyman says there was a bit of luck involved in finding the therapy that has worked so well for her son. She says there weren’t many options available.
