Measuring the Community's Collective Health

November 11, 2003
Monday, November 11, The Spokane Regional Health District released a report that measures the community’s collective health. The “Spokane Counts” study takes 48 indicators and compares Spokane County residents with people in the rest of the country.
Many of the indicators focus on children. County Health Officer Kim Thorburn tells Spokane Public Radio's Doug Nadvornick some of the findings were expected, but others were not.

Listen to this report (interview)(6:16)

Dr. Kim Thorburn 3:02 “We were a little bit…daily allowance.”

Doug: Kim Thorburn says the report found drug use among some age groups to be higher than state averages. In particular, she says, one area of drug use is particularly disturbing.

Thorburn 1:29 “We do see higher…usually get over it.”

Doug: Thorburn says the report has mixed results related to the sexuality of young people.

Thorburn :53 “We are pleased and…transmitted diseases.”
