Young Children Learning Basic Music Concepts Have an Advantage in School

July 11 , 2003
(Story intro)

What’s the best way to teach young children about language? Or how to do arithmatic? Spokane music teacher Shirley Grossman would encourage you to teach them first how to sing. The rest, she says, will follow.

In her South Hill studio, Shirley Grossman teaches a technique called Kindermusik (kin’-der-moo-zeek’), which stresses skills like listening and singing.

Grossman believes children who learn basic music concepts early have an advantage in learning when they’re in school.

Spokane Public Radio’s Doug Nadvornick reports the next in our “Growing Up Healthy” series.
