Doug Clark's column about Chas, Spokesman Review,

IN MEMORY
Charles 'Chas' Schlesinger

Chas, in 2001 and 2009.

It is sad news that Charlie Schlesinger has passed away after several very hard but love filled years.

Charlie and his long love and partner, Sue McClelland, have
kept us updated on his difficult times over these past few years. He was very brave, very strong, and he struggled through, and overcame so much (including our never-ending staircase). Chas may be gone from our airwaves at KPBX, but will never be gone from our hearts. He was truly one of our originals who came to us when we were very young - a little 10 watt teakettle broadcasting from a South Hill basement, back in the early 70s. Our friend Charlie and his Friday night "Jazz with Chas" show was an institution at KPBX - from that day to now.

Godspeed, Chas - and thanks for everything.

Dick Kunkel, president & general manager

Note: For a good feel about the type of guy Charlie was, read a pdf file of the November, 2001 SPR Guide article, "Here comes Charlie: Chas is Back," written by Janean Jorgensen when he returned to KPBX after his initial surgery.
