Duties & Responsibilities: Gather, write, edit and produce radio
news stories. Produce spot and feature reports for use in newscasts and
in public affairs programs for Spokane Public Radio and Northwest Public
Affairs Network [NPAN] stations. Maintain Coeur D'Alene studio facilities.
Perform other duties as assigned, including participating in Spokane Public
Radio events and on-air fundraising efforts.
Knowledge, skills, & abilities: Demonstrated experience producing
news in a newsroom environment on a daily basis. Demonstrated skills in
interpersonal communications. Ability to write, produce, edit, and deliver
spot and feature news reports. Ability to operate standard and digital
radio equipment. Computer competency and experience with digital editing
programs. Bilingual, Spanish/English speaker a plus.
Essential Work Competencies: Self-starter able to make complex
decisions without direct supervision. Ability to operate within a fast-moving
environment, which includes team members who are geographically separated
from each other. Proven news judgement and ability to maintain high journalistic
standards under deadline pressure, including the highest standards of
balance and fairness. Ability to form strong relationships with relevant
local decision makers. Ability to generate story ideas and develop story
projects. Excellent oral and written skills. Excellent organizational
skills and attention to detail. Must have on-air presence compatible with
Spokane Public Radio and NPR sound.
WORK CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Extended work on the telephone
and computer required. Travel using personal vehicles required. Must have
valid driver's license. Hours may vary according to news demands.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree in broadcasting, mass
communications or closely related field and two years full-time professional
reporting experience; this includes experience in a newsroom environment
gathering, writing, editing and producing news, spot and feature reports;
and a valid driver's license. Experience in print, television or radio
news reporting beyond the 2 year minimum can substitute for education.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to candidates
with experience in public radio news reporting. Familiarity with the issues
and cultural geography of Idaho, Washington and Oregon desired.
