Spokane British Brass Ensemble plays for June 18 KPBX Kids

March around to the sounds of a brass band at the first summer KPBX Kids’ Concert of the year! The June concert features the Spokane British Brass Ensemble performing fun songs kids won’t want to sit still for. (Luckily, no one needs to sit still in the park!) The concert starts at noon on Friday, June 18 at the Clocktower Meadow in Riverfront Park.

The players of the SBBE are all part of the Spokane British Brass Band, which played for KPBX kids at the May 1998 Kids’ Concert. The Ensemble takes a third of the band members, and changes some of the instruments. Instead of cornets, the ensemble uses four trumpets. The E-flat tenor horns are replaced by two horns. Add in four trombones and a tuba and you have the ensemble.

The tuba player happens to be SPR’s own engineer Jerry Olson. Conducting is Mark Williams, a longtime Spokane resident. After studying music at Shadle Park High School and earning degrees from EWU, Mark began teaching band at the Spokane School District’s elementary schools.

The British began forming brass bands as an after-work activity. In 1993, Michael Warner to England and heard the best British brass bands perform in the national competition at London. He found other Spokane musicians to form the Inland Northwest’s brass band.

The summer KPBX Kids’ Concerts are underwritten by Windermere Real Estate, Simverwood Theme Park, Boise Washington Region, and Spokane Cardiology.

Spokane Art School will once again set up a table with special art projects for kids to do during the concert.
