Zorba Paster & Tom Clark visit Spokane

Zorba Paster and Tom Clark brought their weekly radio show "On Your Health" to Spokane on Saturday, June 3, 2000. Zorba Paster On Your Health airs Wednesdays at Noon on KPBX, Sundays at Noon on KSFC.

Spokane Public Radio volunteers were the special guests at the evening affair, which featured medical news (did you know that volunteers live longer?) and their special recipe of the week (which did NOT feature tofu!). The show was held at North Central High School's auditorium. The Volunteers of the Year received awards immediately after the show.

Zorba Paster On Your Health is a mix of medical advice and healthy living tips. In Spokane, Zorba talked about allergies, debunked a web myth about anti-persperants, and emphasized eating fresh fruits and vegetables. “You can’t talk about good health without talking about good food,” he says, “because good health starts with a healthy diet.” (At right, Jim Armstrong asks a question, with Tom Clark holding the microphone.)

Spokane-area callers have asked educated questions on a variety of health topics, says Monika Petkus, national programming director for Wisconsin Public Radio. “If I’ve come away with any ‘picture’ of the typical area caller, it’s one who is proactive about his or her own health – questioning the pros and cons of generic vs. name-brand drugs, looking for non-drug ways to reduce cholesterol, questioning sugar’s effect on mood. And as the questions suggest, they seem open to exploring alternative treatments and ‘healthstyles,’ if you will.”

During the event, Doug Nadvornick and Verne Windham (above) showed off their Zorba Paster scrub shirts -- a prize to some of the show's visitors who could answer some trivia questions -- like what is the food that Tom Clark loves to hate? (Answer: tofu).

Speaking of tofu, on their next program, Tom revealed a poll which showed how many of the attendees liked tofu.

The Volunteer Thank-You Event was underwritten by Huckleberry’s Fresh Market and Group Health Cooperative. Additional thanks to North Central High School, Tom Armitage, School District 81, Cobblestone Baking Co., 4 Seasons Roasting Co., Franklin Park Florists, American Linen, 7-UP Bottling Co., Northwest Gourmet, Wildflowers, Doubletree Downtown Spokane, Riverview Thai Restaurant, Monika Petkus, and all of the KPBX Volunteers.
